Inspection

The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual chimney inspections, with cleaning whenever creosote buildup reaches 1/8 inch. In Milwaukee, homes using fireplaces regularly (3+ times weekly) during our long winters typically need cleaning annually, while occasional users might go 2-3 years between professional cleanings.

Standard chimney cleaning in Milwaukee ranges from $150-$250 for most homes, depending on chimney size, accessibility, and buildup severity. Neglected chimneys with heavy creosote glazing may require specialized cleaning methods costing $300-$500. Most companies offer inspection/cleaning combination packages with better value.

Watch for visible creosote buildup (black, tar-like substance), smoke entering your home, burning odors even when the fireplace isn't used, poor draft, and difficult-to-start fires. Animal sounds or visible nesting materials also indicate cleaning is needed. Any visible creosote glaze (shiny, hardened deposits) requires immediate professional attention.
